On April 7th at The Landers Center, James “Lights Out” Toney 73-7-3 (44 KO’s) squares off against Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn 21-4-1 (18 KO’s) for the IBA Heavyweight Championship of the World. Toney, a sure fire future Hall of Fame Boxer, has won eight world titles in 5 weight classes on his way to his astonishing seventy-seven victories. Toney captured his first world title as a middleweight with an eleventh round stoppage over Michael Nunn and successfully defended that title six times. Toney then went on capture the super middleweight title with a ninth round TKO of Iran Barkley in Las Vegas, Nevada. Toney successfully defended the super middleweight title three times before moving up another weight class to light heavyweight. Consequently, Toney captured the light heavyweight championship, a title he also defended successfully three times, before stepping up another weight class in seek of becoming the cruiserweight champion of the world. The road to becoming the cruiserweight champion of the world was a long one but eventually the journey paid off for Toney as he was awarded the opportunity to meet Vasily Jirov for the title on April 26, 2003. Going into the 12th and final round, with the scores fairly even and the fight in the balance, Toney knocked the undefeated Jirov down in the 12th. The Kazakh rose from the canvas to go to the distance, but Toney got the judges verdict and became a four-weight World Champion. Immediately afterward, Toney moved up to heavyweight. However, Toney did not start off easy in the heavyweight division as he chose former world champion Evander Holyfield as his first fight. After a shaky first round, Toney picked the Atlanta legend apart with shots to the body and head before stopping him in the 9th round. On April 30, 2005, he defeated John Ruiz by a unanimous decision in a 12-round match for the Heavyweight Championship.
Bobby Gunn, a native of Ontario, Canada now fighting out of Hackensack, NJ, comes in to this IBA Heavyweight Championship bout as the reigning and defending BareKnuckle Heavyweight Champion of the World. On August 5, 2011 Gunn fought Richard Stewart in the first sanctioned BareKnuckle boxing match since 1889. Gunn defeated Stewart with a KO in round 3, winning the vacant heavyweight BareKnuckle boxing title, previously held by BareKnuckle boxing hall of famer John L. Sullivan. Four months later, Gunn defended his BareKnuckle crown, stopping Ernest Jackson in less than nine minutes. Before his foray into BareKnuckle fighting Gunn was a prominent and successful gloved boxer as he is the former IBA Cruiserweight Champion of the World.
